About

The Journalism and Mass Communication course started in 1984 as part of the Department of Political Science. In 1985, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication became independent and offered a two-year diploma program. From 1995 onward, a one-year diploma course was introduced. The Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication program was offered from 2001-2004. The MA (Mass Communication) program has been offered since 2007. The department has started a Ph.D. program from the session 2024-25.

• To create a sound interface with the industry for adequate exposure of the students to the real-world functioning of various media forms.

Dear Students, Parents, and Visitors,
Welcome to the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Allahabad. As the Head of this distinguished Department, I am privileged to lead a team of learned and dedicated faculty members who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and professional practice in the field of journalism and mass communication.
In its journey that expands 40 years, our department has produced journalists, media professionals, and scholars who are making significant contributions to the industry and academia. The department currently offers two programmes – MA (Mass Communication) and PhD. Our MA programme offers a dynamic curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills related all media forms, ensuring that our students are well-prepared to navigate and contribute to the rapidly evolving media landscape. Our doctoral programme is designed to enable researchers engage with high-quality research and contribute to advancement of knowledge in the field of journalism and media.
To enable students develop the relevant skills of a journalist and media professionals the department provides several facilities in the department that include – ICT-enabled smart classrooms, computer and media lab, editing lab etc. Besides, we also provide students with hands-on experience of video production, print production, photography and other practical assignments to expose them to the latest technologies and practices in media industry.
Continuous mentoring, industry interface with courses and activities like field visits, internships and projects are the salient features of the department. Out department has a strong industry linkage that help our students with valuable internship and career opportunities as they join us on their journey in achieving their career goals.
