Bioinformatics is a rapidly advancing interdisciplinary field that integrates biological sciences, computational methods, and information technology to analyze and interpret complex biological data. The discipline plays a pivotal role in modern biological and biomedical research by enabling data-driven understanding of molecular and cellular processes.
Established in 2002, the Centre of Bioinformatics offers a four-semester (two-year) M.Sc. program in Bioinformatics. The program is uniquely structured and updated with a rigorous credit-based curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines, covering contemporary and emerging areas of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Designed for students from both Biological Sciences and Mathematical/Computational backgrounds, the program aims to develop highly skilled bioinformaticians with strong theoretical foundations and practical expertise to address diverse biological and biomedical challenges through computational approaches.
Since 2025, the Centre has been offering NEP-based Skill Enhancement Courses (2 credits) for undergraduate students enrolled in various UG programmes at UoA. These courses provide foundational exposure to key concepts and applications of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, fostering interdisciplinary learning and computational awareness among undergraduate learners.
In addition to postgraduate teaching, the Centre offers a Doctoral Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Major research areas include Biomedical Genomics, Computational Systems Biology, Computer-Aided Drug Design, Evolutionary Bioinformatics, Multi-omics, and Pharmacogenomics. Over the years, the Centre has produced numerous distinguished alumni who are actively engaged in doctoral and postdoctoral research and are serving in reputed universities, research institutions, healthcare sectors, and bioinformatics and data analytics industries in India and abroad.
