An interactive session of students with Ms. Ina Goel was organized on March 6, 2019 at 2.00 PM at the Department of Anthropology, University of Allahabad. Ms. Ina has worked extensively with the Hijra community of India and is currently based at the Department of Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was a recipient of the prestigious INLAKS scholarship to pursue research in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University College London. She is currently working on the Kinnar Akhada at the Kumbh Mela and was here for her fieldwork. She specially interacted with students who recently completed their fieldwork at the Kumbh Mela as part of their Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. She talked about the issue of plurality in ethnographic understanding of Kumbh. Issues of multiple identities, site of pilgrimage, consumerism, embedded economies, politics etc. according to her help in constructing the ethnographic canvas. She emphasized on the process of questioning the constructed selves and the images of the other as important methodological tools in anthropological fieldwork. Students shared their observations with her. Guest Faculty members and Research Scholars were also present during the event.
Later she also interacted with Prof. V. K. Rai, Head, Department of Anthropology, University of Allahabad on the issue of relevance of her study to the larger body of knowledge on Gender and Sexuality. Prof. Rai emphasized the naturality of paradoxes in the Indian Civilizational context which was also an important theoretical thread binding her observations. Dr. Shailendra K. Mishra of the Department of Anthropology emphasized on the importance of inclusion within the idea of civilization. Dr. Rajesh Singh, Co-ordinator, Gandhi Bhavan, was also present during the discussion.
