Women's Advisory Board

Message from the Vice Chancellor

University life, for students, is a voyage of discovery and of creating and sharing knowledge. It is a period of intellectual excitement, of joyous friendships and the warmth of a life-long relationship between teachers and the taught. All students should benefit from this unique experience. The University of Allahabad (UoA) is firmly committed to providing an environment for realising this experience without discrimination of any kind.

The Women’s Advisory Board (WAB) of the nodal agency in respect of the policy of the University against sexual harassment. The said policy as well as the Rules and Procedures for the WAB (Resolution No 21/18) were approved by the Executive Council of the UoA in its meeting on August 12, 2011.

I am happy that the WAB-UoA has been doing notable work for gender sensitization and in dealing with complaints of harassment, if any. The Report of the Hon’ble Justice Verma Commission, set up by the Government of India, highlights the role of educational institutions, particularly the universities, in changing entrenched social mindsets.

However, the task is enormous and needs the commitment of the wider University community. I look forward to everyone’s cooperation so that we may achieve our common aim of realising the constitutional promise of equality in all spheres for women.

Our Activities

September 27, 2013. Valedictory Function for Self Defence Course

The self defence course organised for girls of AU drew to a close on 27 September, 2013. A special Valedictory function was organised to mark the occasion. The chief guest, Dr A.R. Siddiqui, Dean Student Welfare came despite the fact that there were many demands on his time because of the turmoil in the campus on account of the student’s union elections and agitation by students. He won over the hearts of the students with his sharp wit and sense of humour. Speaking next as the Guest of Honour, Prof Anita Gopesh spanned a wide canvas of issues. She spoke about mindsets in a patriarchal society and the socialisation of girls and boys at very early ages that slotted them in stereotyped roles.

The girls gave their feedback on the course and said that it had brought about a dramatic change in their lives. Earlier they were fearful and anxious and felt insecure in moving about. Not anymore. The course had boosted their self confidence and they felt more confident about facing new situations. They expressed their feeling in poems, some of which are reproduced here.

September 9, 2013, A Proud Day for WAB!

Speaking to a packed audience, Prof Singh said websites offer an invaluable platform for communication and was very appreciative of WAB’s webpage that is being hosted within the AU website. He said that the webpage would be a window to the world and a platform for sharing ideas and news. He also lauded the efforts being made to involve both boys and girls in the activities of WAB and the steps undertaken for gender sensitization and for empowering girls.

Shri U.K. Srivastava said that he was very happy to be back in the University of Allahabad where he had spent many happy years. The audience listened with rapt attention as he reminisced about his days in AU. He said that this was the golden period in one’s life and they must make the most of it. Amid much applause he inaugurated the self defence course. Earlier Prof Ranjana Kakkar welcomed the guests and introduced Shri Vivek Srivastava, who holds a black belt and is an expert trainer. Dec 17, 2012 Lecture by Ms Meera Shankar, IFS,

The Women's Advisory Board (WAB) organised a lecture on "India's role in the emerging global context" at the economics department of Allahabad University. Dr Nisha Srivastava introduced the speaker. She said that Ms Meera Shankar, IFS, served as India’s Ambassador to the USA from 2009 to 2011. She was India’s second woman ambassador to the USA. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was the first. Earlier she served as India’s ambassador to Germany.

She joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973. Meera Shankar served as a Director in the Prime Minister’s Office from 1991 to 1995. She also served in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry where she headed two important divisions dealing with the South Asian Association o f Regional Cooperation and relations with India’s neighbours.

In her lecture, Ms Shankar spoke on integrating economic, historical, political and strategic dimensions. She mentioned China's growing clout in the global context and its large trade surpluses with other countries. China's prospects depend on the demand in the United States, and in turn the US has a tenuous relation with china because the latter holds vast treasury bonds. This has resulted in what some have called the 'balance of terror," she said. The lecture was attended by a large group of students who enthusiastically participated in the interaction after the lecture. Ms Shankar also gave away the prizes to winners of various competitions organised by WAB.

Dec 20, 2012 Massive Demonstration Against Delhi Rape Case

The closing weeks of the year brought reports of the savage gang-rape of a young woman in Delhi that jolted people all over the country out of their complacence. The incident shook the nation’s conscience and was a grim reminder of the long road that lies ahead for women’s equality. The gruesome tragedy spurred an unprecedented mobilisation across the country and people witnessed a heartening show of solidarity.

WAB was possibly the first organisation in the city to lead a huge procession to protest against the event. Hundreds of students, both boys and girls participated in the march on 20th December. We have attached some photographs of the protest march.

WAB members also participated in a massive Mahila Jan Sansad organised on 19 January 2013 to demand women’s right to security and dignity. This was held in the historic Chandra Shekhar Azad Park and was attended by women and girls from all walks of life and included women from rural areas who had come from far off villages. Prior to this meeting and in order to mobilise support for this a large meeting was held in the women’s college campus.

March 8, 2013 Celebrates International Women’s Day!

WAB celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm in the Women’s College Campus. A nukkad natak was staged by members of Stree Mukti Sangathan on women’s oppression and the need for solidarity. The girls of Kalpana Chawla Hostel also staged a play that was full of humour but raised many stark questions. What if men had to go through the same indignities that women are subject to? The attitudes of the police, bureaucracy, and society also came in for scrutiny. The plays were followed by a film ‘girls unlimited’ made by eminent film maker Paromita Vohra. This was followed by an intense and enthusiastic discussion. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised that despite the fact that exams were going on and it had become quite dark and very late in the evening, the girls wanted to continue the discussion. We perforce had to wind up and call it a day, but the girls were in no mood to have the programme end!

In the beginning Dr Nisha Srivastava welcomed all the girls and said that the event was being organised in collaboration with Stree Mukti Sangathan, a well known city based women’s organisation. Prof Rajul Mathur proposed a vote of thanks. Others who were present were Dr Pratima, Dr Chanda Devi, Dr Shabnam, Dr Tanveer, members of WAB and other guests.

Brief Report of the National Seminar on Everyday Heroines: Justice, Poverty and Development held on March 4, 2014 at the Dept of Political Science, AU

Prof Nisha Srivastava, Secretary, Women's Advisory Board, AU –

A national seminar on "Everyday Heroines: Justice, Poverty and Development" was organized under the auspices of the Women's Advisory Board, University of Allahabad on March 4, 2014. A very large number of teachers and students participated in the event. At the outset Prof Ranjana Kakkar, Chairperson of WAB welcomed the guests and introduced the distinguished speakers to the audience. Prof Nisha Srivastava, secretary of WAB spoke about the objectives of the seminar. She said that the seminar has many firsts and outlined three new initiatives introduced by WAB. For the first time in the University, WAB started the Mahadevi Varma Memorial Lecture. She said that Mahadeviji was not only a renowned poetess, but also a champion of women’s rights. It is very appropriate that the first lecture will be delivered by Ms Subhashini Ali Sehgal who has been in the forefront of the women’s movement in India for several decades.

Prof Srivastava said that the second unique initiative was the presentation on Everyday Heroines by students. This was an effort to instil a gender perspective in students through actual practice. She said that WAB firmly believes that Universities should not be ivory towers. Research and scholarship are not born in a vacuum. They thrive and bloom when fertilized with social reality. To promote gender sensitization, WAB held a unique contest called Everyday Heroines. Students had to survey poor women and present their findings in any multi-media format. They formed teams that included both boys and girls. She said the teams would make presentations in the seminar and hoped the audience would appreciate their efforts and encourage them.

The third novel initiative was the Felicitation of Student Achiever of the Year. She said that the Women’s Advisory Board will felicitate every year a girl student who has made a mark in some field and brought glory to the University. Ms Gyanandni Rawal, a student of MSc will be felicitated as a student achiever this year. Among other achievements she represented Uttar Pradesh as a best cadet in the Republic Day Camp in New Delhi in 2011 and was selected to represent India in the Youth Exchange Camp held in Dhaka in Bangladesh.

Dr Lalsa Yadav highlighted the works of Mahadevi Varma and her feminist approach focusing on role and condition of women in National Movement. Ms Subhashini Ali, President of AIDWA then delivered an eloquent and powerful speech to a large, enthusiastic crowd of students and teachers. The crowd listened with rapt attention. She began by introducing the audience to Lalli Devi, a poor dalit woman from Phulpur. She said that dalit women are everyday paying the price of being poor. Lalli devi was tortured, paraded naked and humiliated in her village only because she dared to ask for a house under the Indira Awas Yojana. She said that people like Lalli Devi were the everyday heroines. They stood for their rights and struggled against exploitation and poverty.  She said that we must not accept traditions unquestioningly because most of them are perpetuated to suppress women and keep them in subordination. She also spoke about the harmful culture of TV commercials. She drew loud applause when she recalled one ad in which the worth of a girl is shown to be no more than the value of a can of paint of a particular brand. In this ad a girl cannot get married because the walls of her house have not been painted by a particular brand of paint. As soon as she gets the paint, she is able to get married! She also spoke about the police and the administration which are blind to the plight of poor and underprivileged women. Prof Krishna Gupta, who chaired the session thanked the speaker and called the session to a close.

The second session began with a presentation by Prof Ravi Srivastava, of Jawaharlal Nehru University on the theme of Gender and Poverty. Prof Ranjana Kakkar introduced the distinguished speaker and said that he held important positions in government and had been on many policy making committees. He was member of the NCEUS that highlighted the startling finding that almost three fourths of the population live below Rs 20 a day. He has been the recipient of the VV Giri Award for Labour Research, and the UGC award in Economics (2000). Prof Srivastava spoke extensively about women’s role in the economy, and her economic and social status. He gave data to show women’s declining participation in the workforce. The session was chaired by Prof U.S. Rai, Dean Faculty of Commerce.

Ms Renu Mishra, advocate and member of the Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives (AALI) gave a powerful speech on various gender related laws and their implication in practice. She spoke about the cases that AALI had taken up to help women exercise their right to choice in marriage and the role of the administration in each of these cases.

The presentations by prize winning teams of students received loud applause by the crowd. The prizes were distributed by Prof Rajul Mathur and Ms Renu Mishra and assisted by Dr Bandana Tripathi. The seminar concluded by a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sangeeta Srivastava, Member WAB  & Head, Deptt. of Home Science who thanked all the teachers, students, resource persons, employees and media for their participation and for making the event a thunderous success.
