Day #2:

 During the second day of the International Training Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) that is going on at Centre of Environmental Science, University of Allahabad. Resource person from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Dr. Rajesh Bahadur Thapa has given an introductory lecture on how to use Synthetic Aperture Radar data to monitor forest cover and forest cover change to overcome clouds problem in tropical countries. Later on he has demonstrated how to use Lets SAR toolbox developed by JAXA to process L-band SAR data (PALSAR) to monitor forest cover and forest cover change with high accuracy. This monitoring system will support development of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system required for REDD+ mechanism implementation. In the second half Dr. Ram Avtar has given theoretical aspects about how to measure forest above ground biomass and how geospatial data is useful to upscale biomass information. Dr. Avtar demonstrated about use of PALSAR data to monitor above ground biomass. So finally this kind of capacity training programme can contribute towards implementation of REDD+ policies at National level. At the end of programme Prof. Anupam Dikshit (HOD Botany) and Prof. R. R. Tiwari (Dean Science) gave valedictory remark and certificates distribute to all the participants. Finally Dr. Ram Avtar concluded the session by thanking all the participants and people involved for the success of this programme and especial thanks to Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) for providing the funding to conduct this programme at University of Allahabad.

Day #1:

The two days international Hand’s on training program on Monitor Forest Cover and Deforestation using Advanced Remote Sensing Techniques under UN-CECAR/INATE Framework in support of REDD+ MRV System was inaugurated by Prof. R.L. Hangloo, Hon’ble VC, UoA on May 17, 2016 at 10 am in DD Pant Auditorium, Department of Botany, University of Allahabad. The hands on training was jointly organized by United Nations University Institute of the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) Tokyo, Japan, Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and University of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Prof. Hangloo acknowledged zeal of the department in bringing international agencies together and promised that the university will continue to encourage such programs. He cited the invaluable depth of knowledge in Indian literature as far back as the 7th century about the value of ecosystem services of forest and therefore the duty of youngsters to build on them. Most importantly this value recognition should translate into locally relevant action before it is too late. Protection of the Ganga and serving India’s Swach Mission are typical cases in point. These are essential to overcome the stupor that has set in over nearly in six decades and piggy back on the call for collective action by the present national level leadership.

Resource person from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Dr. Rajesh Bahadur Thapa highlighted the importance of geospatial data by JAXA. Director Vigyan Prasar of Government of India, Prof. R. Gopichandran congratulated the department because it was responding to the call for focused capacity building for the country. He emphasized on the opportunity to document empirical evidences and assist policy architecture through these initiatives. He finally indicated the department can become a hub for policy prescriptions much needed to complement scientific investigation in this regard. Organizing secretary, Dr. Ram Avtar gave the importance of REDD+ in climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as use of geospatial data to monitor forest cover and deforestation. He also spoke about details of the workshop and APN funded project. Since plants play important role in the ecosystem and climate change and as such plants their identification on classical and current line in the form of book ‘Taxonomy of Angiosperm- Basic concepts, molecular aspects and future prospects’ authored by Prof. Anupam Dikshit, M.O. Siddiqui and Ashutosh Pathak was also released by the Vice Chancellor during the session. The publication is especially for the benefit of plant and environmental lovers. The book has foreword by Director Botanical Survey of India, Dr. Paramjit Singh. Bringing this book through selfless service to the concerned readers and so the cost has been kept affordable to 299 only.

While welcoming the guest from India and abroad and participants coordinator of environmental science and convener of the Hands on training Prof. Anupam Dikshit highlighted that the department of Botany and Environmental Science, University of Allahabad is a learning centre not the earning centre i.e. why the registration of the participants have been done without any registration fee i.e. zero amount. The program ended with the national anthem.

Aim:

The aim of the hands-on-training programme is to develop the capacity of various stakeholders to use remote sensing data (optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)) to monitor forest cover and deforestation. This capacity development programme will strengthen the scientific knowledge about forest cover and deforestation monitoring to develop a better understanding about role of forests in Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism implementation.
