Prof.Savindra Singh has been awarded an Honorary Fellow of International Association of Geomorphologists and elected as President of Indian Institute of Geomorphologists and Prof. A. R Siddiqui was re-elected as Secretary-Generalof the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists. Prof. Siddiqui presented his work in the technical session on Desertification as Evidenced from Changing Pasture Land Ecology. Prof. A. R. Siddiqui and Mr Avijit Sahay jointly presented a paper on Emergent Issue of River Bank Erosion, Geomorphological Change And Migration Experiences In Majuli, Assam. It highlighted that the Neo-Vaishnavite culture of Majuli is based on the primacy of monasteries called ‘Satras’ insocial and religious matter of the island. The paper concluded that river bank erosion in the Brahmaputra has impacted the change in the geography of Island by massive erosion. Secondly, change in the pattern of landuse matrix and finally closing down as well as therelocation of Satras outside Majuli has brought large-scale changes to the geography of Majuli and in the process has modified the island’s age-old society and economy.
The next conference of IAG would be held in Portugal in the year 2021. Indian Institute of Geomorphologists, Department of Geography, University of Allahabad feel proud to hold this conference in India. Prof. Rattan Lal Hangloo grace the Valedictory function of the 9th ICG conference as Guest of Honour on 11th November 2017 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.Prof.Hangloo highlighted that population increase is pacing huge demand on food production’the capacity to produce is being severely limited by anthropogenic and climate driven soil degradation and erosion.Geomorphologists can identify the outcomes and risks and communicate them effectively to resource managers,planners,industry,government and the public. As the Secretary-General of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists Prof. Siddiqui appreciated the effort of Prof. Sunil De, Convenor and Secretary-General of International Association of Geomorphologists to hold this Olympic of Geomorphology in India with great success.
